Martin Osner - Art Photography and Fine Art Photography Courses Taught Online

Martin Osner is an award-winning artist and lecturer who, through his workshops, shares a unique approach to creating stunning prints using unusual alternative processes, including image transfers. His online lessons are focused on teaching the art of photography instead of a "craft type" methodology.

Martin's unusual approach introduces the camera as a tool on the workbench of art. His practice embraces the inconsistencies of the photographic process, which he combines with traditional art mediums to produce spectacular artwork.

Step by step, his students progress through from decorative to exhibition art over twenty lessons. His week by week program is split into four courses comprising of five modules each.

As Martin's program builds from lesson to lesson, students start at lesson 1 and progressively follow the course. He also keeps his class size small to ensure quality experience guided through mentorship.

Here's an introduction video into Martin's philosophy about fine art photography and his art gallery with details on the Fine Art Photography course he presents.  Also, look at this video which gives further detail into his teaching.

The rebirth of widespread interest in the early 19th century processes such as wet collodion and tintype is a response to the seemingly unfeeling mechanical nature of digital printmaking. This workshop is about changing that point of view.

This is a workshop about possibilities. My mentor, Jean Pierre Sudre, speaking about the making of work, is quoted, “maintenant, on a ces possibilités” (now we have these possibilities). He was always looking for a way to introduce the element of matter and dimension into the photographic print in subtle but effective treatments.

During the week participants examine the possibilities to create custom printable substrates. This might involve coating a rag fine art paper with inkAID Inkjet Receptive Coatings. We use techniques that allow us to print on metal surfaces. Students create digital skins that can be attached to a variety of surfaces. We print onto film and transfer the images to stone paper, metal and plexiglass to name a few. The result of the week’s work is an expanded idea of what the digital print can be and an almost limitless range of possibilities of what individual imagery can become.

A portfolio review is required for admission to this course. You can submit a portfolio via a link to your website, online portfolio, or print submission.

Workshop Title: Introduction To Experimental Photographic Techniques

Workshop Description:

Introduction to Experimental Photographic Techniques, inkjet printing on custom coated painted papers.

All materials will be included, but you’ll need to bring 4 images on a portable drive.

In this 4 hour workshop you’ll learn how to inkjet print black & whiteimages on a painted paper surface. Bring a work shirt because we'll be painting paper and then applying inkAID Clear Gloss Type II inkjet receptive coating to the painted surface. Next, we'll go through image selection and image editing techniques for best results. Then we'll go through print setting to start your alternative printing adventure. Finally, we'll print an image on your custom coated hand painted paper.

In the second part of class, we'll critique our new images and discuss the possibilities of future applications. I’m looking forward to trading in my specialty lenses and processing techniques for a spongy brush and a hair dryer.

This the perfect introduction to the world of Experimental Photography. Rethinking and recycling images is just the start of the process. Later workshops will focus on other processes and developing a style all your own.

Supervised Open Print Lab Description:

Students, who have already completed the Introduction To Experimental Photographic Techniques workshop, are invited to bring their images and inkjet coated substrates for printing on Epson 4500 and Epson 5000 inkjet printers. Learn how to properly run your custom prepared inkjet substrates through the printers, what printer settings to use, and hints about preparing your images in Photoshop and Lightroom.

The Open Print Lab is designed for students who have completed the workshop and wish to practice under the supervision of John Granata. Supplies are not included. There will be a hair dryer, dry mount press, and drop cloths available for use.
