Biography

Travis Patterson is a fine art photographer with supplemental training in agriculture, ecology and education. While his career path is dedicated to the therapeutic and passionate outlets that art and education provide, it is the spiritual connection and the sublime forces of nature that inspire him most. As a child, rural Virginia impacted him deeply growing up; attending a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) trek through the Wind River range of Wyoming in high school that affirmed his true love for wilderness. He has visited 48 states to make photographs and contemplate the role that American culture has played on the landscape. In recent years he has written and evaluated high school photography programming for the Corcoran Gallery of Art (DC), graduated Prescott College a baccalaureate and Frederick Sommer Fellow (AZ), earned K-12 teaching certification in public school art (AZ), taught photojournalism in a Katrina-ravaged New Orleans (LA) and has served on the board of executives for the Prescott Areas Arts & Humanities Council (AZ). He currently resides in Savannah, Georgia as he finishes his MFA degree in photography.

Processes / Techniques

At the heart of my artistic vision for this body of work is our society's general lack of connection to the landscape, its flora and its fauna. In my work I aim to showcase this core belief through two extremes: the presentation of steroidal, genetically engineered landscape and the silhouetted landscape that provides a sense of distant anonymity. Layering newspaper, paint, foil, found trash and inkjet pigment prints allow me to add dimensionality to this narrative through symbols of freedom, commerce, discovery and history. It also elevates the fantastic qualities of the piece that can escape a hard wiring to reality, allowing gestation of ideas alone.

Favorite inkAID Products

I’m absolutely in love with Clear Gloss Precoat Type II. I appreciate its versatility on all of the surfaces that I incorporate into my process including metal, newspaper, aluminum foil and even over top of acrylic paint. I appreciate the fact that no prior mixing or pre-coats need be applied as my process already takes days of preparation to begin with. Furthermore, an inkjet print made onto Type II can be easily removed if I’m dissatisfied with the print, allowing me to reapply another layer of inkAID and print another image over that same surface again. I find the price more than reasonable and that each ounce can go a long way. I find myself constantly fascinating photographers and painters alike with a hybrid process made possible by inkAID alone.
